1. General information
The approach of this subject is to provide the student with the acquisition of knowledge about psychic disorders, the skills and attitude to deal professionally with any patient, and to know how to obtain the information that will allow them to make an adequate assessment so that, applying a good clinical common sense, they will be able to make prioritized decisions for an adequate therapeutic approach.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/), in such a way that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to the achievement of Goals 3, 4 and 5.
2. Learning results
1. To be able to assess the clinical, epidemiological and public health relevance of psychiatric disorders.
2. To know how to maintain an adequate therapist-sick person relationship, complete a clinical record, and explore a patient with psychiatric disorders.
3. To know the fundamental clinical data on psychiatric disorders listed in the International Classification of Diseases, ICD-11 of the WHO, as well as in the DSM-5.
4. To know how to make and defend a psychiatric diagnosis that allows an adequate occupational assessment.
5. To know how to apply basic therapeutic schemes in patients with psychiatric disorders, integrating adequately in an interdisciplinary group.
6. To be able to analyse, structure and synthesize the information contained in scientific articles of the specialty in order to contrast and justify their application to patients and to be in a position to propose a research project in a psychiatric field of interest to the occupational therapist.
3. Syllabus
1. General Part:
- History and current concept of Psychiatry. Current doctrinal trends. Relationships with other areas of knowledge and, specifically, with Occupational Therapy.
- Major psychopathological syndromes.
- The psychiatric clinical record. The interview and the psychopathological examination. Complementary explorations. General etiological, diagnostic and therapeutic schemes in Psychiatry for the occupational therapist.
2. Specific part:
- The most relevant psychiatric disorders according to current classifications.
3. Therapeutic part:
- Psychotherapeutic treatments of interest.
- Rehabilitation in Mental Health.
4. Academic activities
Theoretical classes (30 h): Theoretical-practical sessions in which the contents of the subject will be explained: 2 classes per teaching week
Practices and seminars on problem solving and case studies (30 h): Reading, discussion and resolution of clinical cases : 1-2 per teaching week. Practical classes: Approach to assessment through questionnaires/tests and clinical interview tools: 1 every 2 weeks approx.
Teaching assignments and other activities (10 h): Small group work distributed in the Seminars and Practices will be carried out and delivered in the time indicated by the teacher in charge.
Personal study and evaluation (80 h)
5. Assessment system
1. Theoretical exam (40% grade): It may include theoretical questions, seminars and practices It consists of ten short questions.
2. Theoretical-practical exam (40% grade): Resolution of a clinical case.
3. Other evaluations (20% grade): There will be evaluations in Seminars and Practices (mandatory and essential to pass the subject: in case of non-attendance or failure to pass this part of the subject, the student must take a third part of the exam, which will include specific contents of the seminars and practices).
The final grade for Seminars and Practices will only be saved during the current academic year.
In order to pass the subject, it is essential to obtain an overall grade of 5 points.
The results obtained by the student are graded as follows: Outstanding (9.0-10.0), Notable (7.0-8.9), Pass (5.0-6.9), Fail (0.0-4.9). Honours (MH) will be awarded, from among the students who obtained a grade of “Outstanding”. When necessary, a specific exam may be convened for this purpose among the students selected for their best grades.
